Buchans in Newfoundland Senior Hockey
The Buchans Miners would win the Herder Trophy five times: in 1950, 1951, 1952, 1954, 1963. They would be runners up a total of nine times: in 1937, 1940, 1948, 1953, 1955, 1956, 1964, 1968 and 1969.
ASARCO Mining Company ended their support of the Buchans Miners hockey club after the 1968-69 season.
Buchans entered the Herder Trophy playoffs for the first time in 1936 as one of three teams from the west. They defeated Grand Falls in two games with scores of 5-3 and 6-5. However Buchans would be eliminated at home by the Corner Brook Royals in two close games, 4-3 and 5-4.
The Miners would outscore the Corner Brook Royals 7-3 and become the Western champs.

Gus Soper first became Manager of the Buchans Miners in1945. He would manage the Miners until 1970.
