Born and raised in Gander, Ed was a product of Gander's minor hockey system. He played on the Gander Junior Flyers and was called up to the Senior team in 1967-68 at age 16. That year he played left wing on a high scoring line with Leo Kane and centre Jacques Allard.
Ed played with the Galt Hornets in 1972-73 and Whitby Mcdonalds in 1974-75 & the Whitby Warriors in 1975-76 while stationed with the RCMP in Ontario.
He won three Herder Championships including two with the Gander Flyers in 1969 and 1980. Ed was the Nfld Senior League scoring leader in 1978-79 with 126 points in 30 games. He played 251 games in eight years of senior hockey scoring 173 goals and 286 assists for a total of 459 points,
Ed was inducted into the Newfoundland & Labrador Hockey Hall of Fame in 2000.
