Veitch Memorial Trophy
A trophy was donated by the Buchans Athletic and Social Club in memory of Cyril Veitch who died in December 1949 at the age of 39. A native of St. John's, Cyril moved to Buchans in his early 1920s to work at the new mine. He was closely associated with the Buchans Athletic and Social Club for many years and was an Executive member of NAHA. He served as NAHA Vice Chairman in 1948-49 and was Deputy Chairman in 1949.
Later the names of Cyril's brothers, John and Philip, were added to the Trophy. John Veitch was an outstanding athlete in St. John's who died at age 23 in December 1943 while serving as a Sergeant in the 166th Newfoundland Field Regiment in Italy. Philip Veitch moved to Buchans from Holyrood in the 1930s. A past member of the Buchans hockey team, Philip passed away at the age of 38 in 1954.
The inaugural all-Newfoundland Junior Championship Series
After several unsuccessful attempts, junior hockey was organized at the provincial level for the 1952-53 season. The Veitch Trophy was to be first awarded in 1952 but that would not happen until 1953 when Bell Island hosted the All-Newfoundland Finals. The Grand Falls Junior All-Stars were awarded the Veitch Memorial in March 1953 as the first All-Newfoundland champions.
Currently, the winner of the Veitch trophy winner participates in the Don Johnson Memorial Cup. This is Eastern Canada's Junior B hockey championship.
